Living Marine Resources

  1. Method and system for processing fish portions

A method of processing fish portions determines at a control unit a target weight of a cut fish portion; inspects a fish portion using an inspection unit to determine a mass distribution of said fish portion and providing said mass distribution to the control unit; calculates a cutting plan of the fish portion based on the target weight and the mass distribution using the control unit; uses a mechanical gripper so as to grip the fish portion and arrange said fish portion for execution of the cutting plan; and cuts the fish portion using a cutting unit in accordance with the cutting plan so as to produce a cut fish portion in accordance with the target weight. A system for processing fish portions is configured to perform the foregoing method, among others.

  1. Researchers at the University of Minnesota are exploring whether algae species could serve as a sustainable source of sugar.

New symbiotic relationship between algae and bacteria has potential to create nitrogen, a necessary chemical for fertilisers. It could also be used for carbon capture. “If you convert that carbon to something that isn’t a gas, but into a commodity like sugar, that has value,” said Dr. Barney. “Then you have another driver besides just trying to pull CO₂ out of the atmosphere; you’re making a new crop.”

  1. The impact of liquid-pressurized extracts of Spirulina, Chlorella and Phaedactylum tricornutum on in vitro antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and bacterial growth effects and gut microbiota modulation

“The impact of Spirulina, Chlorella and Phaeodactylum tricornutum (P. tricornutum) microalgal extracts obtained by pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) on antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, microbial growth and in vitro gut microbiota composition was evaluated.

The microalgal biomolecules’ digestion promoted the release of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) during in vitro colonic microbiota fermentation, particularly acetic, butanoic and propanoic, indicating that the biomolecules in microalgae extracts have potential health benefits for human gut.”
