B2E Technological Sonar Initiative #19

The Technology Sonar, promoted by B2E CoLAB, highlights the latest innovations in the blue bioeconomy. In May, we highlight the lucrative potential of tropical shrimp farming in temperate countries, as well as the antiviral power of red algae against herpes. Chitosan proves to be versatile, with varied biomedical applications, while certain seaweeds offer benefits for food and pharmaceuticals. The fishing industry also takes advantage of by-products, turning them into fertilizers and protein concentrates. In addition, integrated multi-trophic aquaculture is emerging as a sustainable solution for the seafood industry. Stay up to date on these promising innovations and technological advances in the blue bioeconomy.

AQUACULTURE

Germany’s clearwater shrimp RAS champion

Bert Wecker, founder of Neomar, believes that farming tropical shrimp in temperate countries is on the verge of being highly profitable, and that the sector is all set for expansion, both in Europe and North America.

Process and apparatus for closed-loop multitrophic aquaculture

The present invention relates to the field of multitrophic aquaculture systems.  Integrated multitrophic aquaculture (IMTA) has been proposed as a more environmentally friendly solution to seafood demand. IMTA refers to the co-culture of different species belonging to different trophic levels. Typically, IMTA systems provide the by-products, including waste, from one aquatic species as inputs for another. Species at the lower trophic level, e.g. plants or invertebrates, may use waste products from the higher trophic species as nutrients. The lower trophic species can be harvested in addition to the fish to give the farmer more revenue or be fed back to the fish.

Antiviral activity of red algae phycocolloids against herpes simplex virus type 2 in vitro

In this study, is evaluated the in vitro antiviral potential of red algae extracts obtained from Agarophyton chilense, Mazzaella laminarioides, Porphyridium cruentum, and Porphyridium purpureum against HSV-2. Future assays in in vivo models for HSV-2 infection should reveal the therapeutic potential of these algae compounds as new antivirals against this virus.

LIVING MARINE RESOURCES

Preparation methods, biological activities, and potential applications of marine algae oligosaccharides: a review

Marine algae are valuable sources of health-promoting molecules that have been consumed by Asians for decades. Among aquatic flora, marine algae stand out in terms of high content of marine algae polysaccharides such as carrageenan, alginate, fucoidan, laminaran, agarose, rhamnan, and ulvan.  Highlights of the biological activities of marine algae oligosaccharides and their potential applications in food, nutraceutical, and pharmaceuticals would also be discussed and summarized.
