Sparos: At the forefront of the Blue Bioeconomy

OCEAN CONNECTORS

In the universe of the blue bioeconomy, Sparos is emerging as a pioneering SME, shaping the course of aquaculture with innovative solutions and cutting-edge products. With a solid scientific foundation in fish nutrition and decades of experience, Sparos, one of B2E CoLAB’s member companies, is designing a sustainable future as it develops cutting-edge micro-feeds and the revolutionary FEEDNETICS™ software. The Ocean Connectors section devotes five questions to Luís Conceição, founder and CEO of Sparos.

What are the main results of Sparos’ work in the field of the blue bioeconomy?

Sparos is a pioneering SME specializing in the development of cutting-edge products and customized nutritional solutions for the aquaculture industry. Leveraged in extensive scientific expertise in fish nutrition and aquaculture, Sparos combines innovative technologies, with a flexible pilot-scale feed platform, and a production line for microfeeds. Over the years, Sparos has led numerous research and development efforts, developing cutting-edge microfeeds (the Hatchery Feeds range), and producing tools like the FEEDNETICSTM software for predicting fish growth, environmental impact of feeding, and fish biochemical composition.

A project in the field of the blue bioeconomy in which you have participated and of which you are proud.

We are particularly proud of producing the FEEDNETICSTM software for predicting fish growth, environmental impact of feeding, and fish biochemical composition. We believe this software and its future competitors, will be a cornerstone for precision feeding in fish farms in the near future.

A project or idea that you would like to implement in the blue bioeconomy?

At Sparos we would like to implement a fast-track service based on omics technologies to evaluate fish nutritional and health condition in lab trials and also in fish farms. We are working on it.

How do you imagine the blue bioeconomy in 30 years’ time?

We hope it will have grown into a sustainable sector, addressing simultaneously the challenges of providing economic growth, and well-paid jobs, and at minimal environmental cost. At Sparos we work every day to contribute to this by enlarging the knowledge basis and delivering practical solutions for precision fish feeding.

How important is the work carried out by B2E CoLAB?

It is very important to create synergies among its partners, and also with other stakeholders. Its work as a main communication hub within the blue bioeconomy and with the society at large is noticeable.
