European Commission launches campaign to promote sustainable aquaculture in the EU
The European Commission has launched an EU-wide campaign to promote sustainable aquaculture, highlighting the dedication of European producers and the benefits of this activity for local economies.
The campaign, entitled “EU Aquaculture. We work for you with passion“, will run for the next three months and aims to increase domestic production, reduce dependence on imports, and boost local economies.
The initiative highlights nine species: mussels, trout, clams, sea bream, oysters, carp, salmon, corvina, and seaweed. Through videos, educational content, and visits to aquaculture sites in the EU, the campaign offers an immersive experience ‘from farm to plate’.
The campaign comes in a context where EU aquaculture production has remained stable since 2018, despite global growth. Among the main obstacles to the growth of aquaculture in the EU are the lack of social acceptance for new aquaculture sites and insufficient awareness of the importance and benefits of this activity for European citizens.
With this initiative, the European Commission aims to raise public awareness of the importance of sustainable aquaculture, boosting confidence in European aquaculture products and promoting sustainable practices that benefit both consumers and the environment.
