What are the main results of CIIMAR’s work in the field of the blue bioeconomy?

CIIMAR is a leading institution in research and advanced training at the University of Porto, working at the forefront of ocean knowledge and innovation. CIIMAR promotes an integrated approach to furthering understanding of the biological, physical, and chemical dynamics of the ocean and coastal areas, aiming to unravel the functioning of ecosystems and the impacts of human activities and responses to global change. Over the years, CIIMAR has participated in numerous research projects that address social challenges through innovation, sustainability, and the growth of the blue bioeconomy. This work has resulted in scientific knowledge, patent registration, and contributions to value creation by driving impactful solutions to marine and environmental challenges.

 

A project in the field of blue bioeconomy in which you participated and of which you are proud.

One project I would like to highlight is a research initiative aimed at advancing the principles of the circular economy within the agri-food sector. Through innovative technological solutions, we focus on valorizing co-products from the agricultural and food industries, transforming them into valuable resources. A significant aspect of this project was incorporating these valorized materials into fish diets, thereby reducing our dependence on imports. This achievement not only promotes sustainability but also enhances the value of local products, leading to carbon neutrality. By offering safe and nutritious seafood options to consumers, we contribute to a more sustainable and resilient food system.

A project or idea you would like to implement in the blue bioeconomy?

In the context of the blue bioeconomy, Portugal should prioritize local production of products that meet strict quality and safety standards. The adoption of sustainable aquaculture practices is a key way to contribute to this goal, ensuring that fish are produced in an environmentally friendly and socially responsible manner. This involves implementing technologies to monitor water quality, reduce waste, and minimize the use of chemicals. Adapting diets for each farm and establishing robust traceability systems increases transparency and accountability throughout the supply chain, reinforcing consumer confidence in the safety and authenticity of seafood products. Collaboration with nutritionists and chefs is essential to raising the quality and appeal of seafood offerings. By developing nutritious and delicious options for consumers, Portugal can capitalize on the growing trend toward acceptance of food products from sustainable sources. The adoption of innovation, quality assurance, and consumer education will solidify Portugal’s position as a leader in delivering safe, high-quality products that are valued by nutritionists and chefs alike and welcomed by discerning consumers. Through these concerted efforts, Portugal can demonstrate its commitment to sustainability and excellence in the blue economy, setting a standard for others to follow.

 

How do you envision the blue bioeconomy in 30 years?

The rapid expansion of the aquaculture industry is set to continue, but growing concerns about animal welfare and environmental impact are driving a shift towards prioritizing lower trophic level species. At the same time, there is an effort to develop nutrient-rich products using advanced biotechnological practices tailored to meet specific dietary needs, especially for vulnerable populations such as children and the elderly. By aligning production practices with these dual objectives, the aquaculture industry can meet the growing demand for fish while reducing its ecological footprint and improving animal welfare standards.

 

What is the importance of the work carried out by B2E CoLAB?

B2E CoLAB has established distinct synergies between two of the most promising sectors in blue growth: biotechnology and aquaculture. Playing a key role, B2E CoLAB has facilitated partnerships between key stakeholders from both sectors, culminating in collaboration on significant projects involving academic, research, and development entities, as well as industrial partners. Furthermore, it is essential to highlight the importance of B2E CoLAB in engaging with society by promoting ocean literacy initiatives.
