The Communications and Marketing Manager at B2E CoLAB, Patrícia Gonçalves, took part in the 2nd National Conference on Ocean Literacy, which was held on November 7 and 8 at the Pavilhão do Conhecimento – Centro Ciência Viva (Pavilion of Knowledge – Live Science Center) in Lisbon. In a disruptive speech, she emphasized that ocean literacy does not depend solely on education, but also on involvement, and that communicating well has an impact on knowledge.
The session, which brought together experts, researchers, companies, artists, and schools, aimed to promote reflection on new approaches to strengthening ocean literacy and the role of communication in sustainability and the blue economy.
At the round table dedicated to “Communication in Ocean Literacy,” Patrícia Gonçalves presented the intervention “Story, Scroll, Spread: The Sea also communicates,” challenging the audience to rethink how the ocean is communicated and perceived.
“The challenge is not technical: it is communicational. The problem is no longer a lack of information, it is a lack of connection,” she said, emphasizing that communication should be seen as a strategic tool capable of generating empathy, curiosity, and action.
During the presentation, Patrícia Gonçalves gave examples of how 360º communication can reinforce ocean literacy, using different formats and channels to reach diverse audiences. The Fish Matter project was presented as a case study, highlighting the storytelling created to make the idea of valuing marine resources and blue circularity understandable and visual.
“Using a metaphor, we made a complex concept visible, showing that the marine economy can be innovative, sustainable, and even fun. Communication has this power: to transform technical topics into human and accessible messages,” she said.
The project’s 360º communication includes press relations, with emphasis on the visibility achieved in media outlets such as Visão magazine; creative campaigns on social media, which bring the public closer to the blue economy; and interactive videos and short documentaries, which explain in an accessible way how the Fish Matter platform works and the potential of marine co-products.
To conclude her speech, Patrícia Gonçalves reinforced the importance of communicating with strategy, purpose, and creativity: “Those who do not communicate do not exist. And those who do not communicate well run the risk of not being understood.”
