The Regional Smart Sea Platform (PREMI) is a flagship initiative for the smart specialisation of the marine and blue economy sectors in Northern Portugal, with B2E – Blue Bioeconomy CoLAB joining the consortium.

Led by CIIMAR, (the Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research), the consortium brings together seven leading organisations working in the blue economy.

The initiative supports CCDR‑N – the Regional Coordination and Development Commission for Portugal’s North Region, the public authority responsible for regional development, territorial planning and EU funds management – in developing the entrepreneurial discovery process and defining investment priorities for the strategic domain of Marine Resources and Blue Economy (PREI REM).

Within the project’s governance structure, B2E – Blue Bioeconomy CoLAB assumes a technical leadership role by coordinating the Working Group dedicated to Biotechnologies, their applications and economic circularity, an area considered critical for the development of new products, processes and sustainable business models in the blue bioeconomy.

As a partner of the Regional Smart Sea Platform, B2E CoLAB contributes its expertise in bridging science and market, actively participating in the identification of technological gaps and innovation opportunities across blue bioeconomy value chains, the formulation of anchor projects and public policy recommendations, and the institutional capacity-building of the Regional Platform, fostering stakeholder engagement in innovation and knowledge transfer processes

Regional Smart Sea Platform: Working Groups

The PREMI project will operate through six working groups: Ocean Monitoring, Coastal Biosystems, Biotechnologies and Circularity, Aquaculture, Ocean Energies, and Advanced Materials. The objective is to create the conditions for Northern Portugal to respond in an integrated manner to the challenges of digital transition, decarbonisation and ocean literacy.

With a total eligible investment of around €647,000, the operation is co-funded by the Norte 2030 Regional Programme through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
