PufaPods

Production of polyunsaturated fatty acids through aquaculture systems

What is it about?

As a leading institution in the field of ocean science and technological innovation PufaPods it is a project funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) it aims to develop the systems of farming and innovative for the production of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) recognized for its benefits on human health.

The project, bet on sustainable and energy efficient, using marine organisms such as amphipods gamarídeos integrating co-products plant in the process of production. The B2E CoLAB it is one of the partners, thus contributing technical expertise and support for the dissemination of the results.

Why is that?

  • Health and nutrition: Production of essential compounds for human consumption.
  • Sustainability: Re-use of co-products, and the use of the bodies of a low impact on the environment.
  • Technological innovation: The development of systems that are modular and scalable.
  • The protection of knowledge: Strategies for the PI to ensure competitiveness and security in technology.

Goals

  • Use amphipods gamarídeos as a sustainable source of PUFAs.
  • Integrate co-products from food processing plants the power supply of the organizations.
  • Monitoring of the profile of fatty acids with the use of tools lipidômicas.
  • Make the monitoring and analysis of Intellectual Property (ip) to protect the bioreactor developed modular.
  • To evaluate the best the strategy for the protection of intellectual property to ensure the sustainability of the production range.
  • In support of the the dissemination and communication to the outside the progress of the project with stakeholders on strategic direction.
