The World Café on Green Energy in Matosinhos, organised by B2E – Blue Bioeconomy CoLAB with the support of the Municipality of Matosinhos, resulted in a set of around 55 measures and strategic recommendations aimed at accelerating the transition to clean energy in the region.
Held as part of the Invest Matosinhos – Month of Companies initiative, the event brought together experts and decision-makers from across the energy, mobility, industry, blue economy, environmental and technological innovation sectors, invited to reflect on the question: “How can we accelerate the transition to green energy in Matosinhos?”
From discussions held at the five thematic tables — Strategy and Governance, Urban Planning and Infrastructure, Projects and Innovation, Citizenship and Energy Justice, and Policies and Regulation — emerged a series of priority actions that reflect the participants’ shared vision for the region’s energy future.
Among these, the creation and promotion of energy communities stood out as the most widely supported proposal. This measure embodies a commitment to decentralised energy production and sharing, involving citizens, companies and the municipality as key drivers of sustainability and local innovation.
Other highly ranked actions included the adoption of green public transport and the reinforcement of sustainable mobility options, the promotion of soft mobility through better pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, the development of a “green smart city”, municipal incentives for a just energy transition, and tax deductions and streamlined administrative processes to boost investment in green energy.
A collective vision for Matosinhos’ energy future
The conclusions drawn from this participatory exercise will form the basis of a final report to be prepared by B2E CoLAB. This document will support Matosinhos’ positioning as a reference territory for energy innovation and the green economy, reinforcing the municipality’s role as a living laboratory for sustainable solutions.
“This collaborative process made it possible to hear a wide range of voices and perspectives, from mobility to industry, from energy to the environment, and translate that diversity into concrete proposals. The 55 measures presented show that Matosinhos brings together the right ecosystem to lead the energy transition,” noted Maria Coelho, Coordinator of B2E CoLAB.
With this session, Matosinhos reaffirms its commitment to sustainability, technological innovation and cross-sector cooperation, demonstrating that the energy transition is not only an environmental challenge, but also an economic and social opportunity.
