On July 24, 2025, the Associação de Solidariedade da Zona das Fontaínhas in Porto hosted a special science literacy event for children and young people aged 6 to 17. This initiative was promoted in partnership with the Sociedade Portuguesa de Inovação (SPI) and B2E – Blue BioEconomy CoLAB, as part of the European BlueMissionAA project. The goal? To make the concept of the Blue Bioeconomy more accessible, inspiring, and practical for all ages.
Part of the Mission Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030, this activity aimed to raise awareness among younger generations about the role of marine resources in building a more sustainable future. The session involved 47 participants, aged between 6 and 17, and although initially designed for secondary school students, the activity was carefully adapted to different age groups, ensuring an inclusive, participatory, and meaningful experience for everyone.
Throughout the workshop, young people were challenged to think creatively about the potential of algae, shells, and fishing by-products (such as fish bones, skins, or heads) as raw materials for areas such as food, energy, or bioplastics. Through practical and accessible activities, science took on a concrete form that was close to everyday life, promoting critical thinking and appreciation of the ocean as a source of innovation and sustainability.
