The Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Blue Economy is about to launch a new policy directive focused on promoting ocean literacy in the blue economy sectors. This initiative, which brings together various stakeholders, including the B2E – CoLAB for the Blue Bioeconomy, aims to address the urgent challenges faced by the Mediterranean region and strengthen understanding and awareness of the importance of marine sustainability.
The document “Promoting Ocean Literacy for Sustainability in Mediterranean Countries” highlights the critical need to involve the blue economy sectors in promoting ocean literacy.
The Mediterranean region is a vital hub for sea-related economic activities, including fishing, aquaculture, maritime transport, and tourism. However, the sustainable development of these activities requires a deep understanding of marine ecosystems and a responsible approach from stakeholders.
The policy document, explains the coordinator of the B2E CoLAB, Maria Coelho, “presents concrete recommendations to promote ocean literacy in the Mediterranean blue economy sectors.” These include “the creation of a regional ocean literacy strategy, the development of educational and awareness programs, and the promotion of collaboration between governments, academia, NGOs and the private sector,” it points out.
The partnership between the Jean Monnet Centre and B2E CoLAB strengthens collaboration between organizations committed to promoting a sustainable blue economy. The inclusion of B2E CoLAB in the Jean Monnet Centre’s network of experts recognizes the Collaborative Laboratory’s experience and commitment to driving research, innovation and literacy actions towards a more sustainable future, particularly in Mediterranean countries.
