Method and system for processing fish portions

A method for processing fish portions that determines, in a control unit, the target weight of a cut fish portion; inspects a fish portion using an inspection unit to determine a mass distribution of said fish portion and provides said mass distribution to the control unit; calculates a cutting plan for the fish portion based on the target weight and mass distribution using the control unit; uses a mechanical gripper to hold the fish portion and position said portion for execution of the cutting plan; and cuts the fish portion using a cutting unit according to the cutting plan in order to produce a cut fish portion according to the target weight. A system for processing fish portions is configured to perform the above method, among others.

Researchers at the University of Minnesota are exploring algae species as a sustainable source of sugar.

A new symbiotic relationship between algae and bacteria has the potential to create nitrogen, a chemical necessary for fertilizers. It could also be used for carbon capture. “If you convert that carbon into something that isn’t a gas, but a compound like sugar, that has value,” says Barney. “So we have another avenue besides just trying to remove CO₂ from the atmosphere; it’s creating a new culture.”

The impact of pressurized liquid extracts of Spirulina, Chlorella, and Phaedactylum tricornutum on antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and bacterial growth effects in vitro and on the modulation of the intestinal microbiota

“The impact of Spirulina microalgae extracts Chlorella and Phaeodactylum tricornutum (P. tricornutum) obtained by pressurized liquid extraction were evaluated for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, microbial growth, and gut microbiota composition in vitro.

The digestion of microalgae biomolecules promoted the release of short-chain fatty acids during in vitro fermentation of the colon microbiota, particularly acetic, butanoic, and propanoic acids, indicating that the biomolecules in microalgae extracts have potential benefits for human gut health.
