Decarbonising the blue bioeconomy starts on land

B2E – Blue Bioeconomy CoLAB, a private non-profit association that bridges science and the market in the blue bioeconomy, has established a partnership with Susplus, a Porto-based technology company that turns business data into insights for measuring sustainability and emissions and identifying opportunities for improvement and decarbonisation. The agreement gives companies in the ocean economy access to tools to measure, reduce and communicate their carbon footprint.

From aquaculture to fisheries, from blue biotechnology to the processing industry, the blue bioeconomy now faces the same demands as the rest of the economy. Scrutiny of emissions is tightening, driven by regulation and by clients and funders who have started asking for proof. The problem is that there is often a wide gap between knowing that decarbonisation is needed and having the means to achieve it. That is the gap this partnership aims to close.

The requirement now has a date. From 27 September, new European rules on environmental claims come into application, and companies will no longer be allowed to describe themselves or their products as “green” or “sustainable” without data to back it up.

For a company, the difference is practical. It no longer has to rely on spreadsheets and files scattered across different places, and instead gains a reliable picture of its emissions, without needing to hire a dedicated team. It can see where cutting carbon also cuts costs, especially in energy, and tackle those areas first. And when a client, a tender or a funder asks for proof of its environmental performance, it has an answer. In the end, it has a solid basis for decision-making.

About Susplus and B2E CoLAB

Susplus began as an academic project at the University of Porto, is incubated at UPTEC Mar and was one of the winning projects at ClimateLaunchpad 2024, the world’s largest green business ideas competition. Its platform takes the data a company has scattered across different sources, organises it into a reliable picture of emissions and helps decide where to start, prioritising the actions with the fastest return. It treats cutting carbon and saving money as part of the same equation.

For B2E CoLAB, the partnership fits its long-standing role: connecting science and the market. With close knowledge of the blue bioeconomy sectors, their companies and their challenges, it is well placed to bring together those who have solutions and those who need them.

The sustainability of the blue bioeconomy is also decided within each company, in its ability to understand and reduce the footprint it leaves behind.
