The historic cannery A Poveira, a national and international benchmark in fish canning, is officially the newest member of B2E – Blue Bioeconomy CoLAB.
Founded in 1938, A Poveira is now the largest Portuguese manufacturer in terms of turnover and production volume, with more than 723 employees, two production units (Matosinhos and Laúndos), and a capacity of over 1.5 million cans per day. With a strong focus on quality, innovation, and sustainability, the company exports 90% of its production to international markets and is recognized for its own brands, such as the iconic Minerva, and for its excellence as a supplier to leading distribution brands.
Poveira’s entry as a member reinforces B2E CoLAB’s mission to accelerate the transition to a sustainable blue bioeconomy, promoting the valorization of marine resources, industrial innovation, and the circular economy. This partnership opens up new opportunities for joint applied research projects, the valorization of co-products (such as fish bones, skin, or heads), the development of new products, and awareness-raising and communication actions on the strategic role of the canning industry in the blue economy.
“Poveira represents the best in fish processing in Portugal. Its entry into B2E CoLAB is a natural step towards strengthening the link between industry and scientific innovation, with a direct impact on the sustainability and competitiveness of the sector,” argues B2E CoLAB coordinator Maria Coelho.
With this association, B2E CoLAB strengthens its collaborative network with an industrial partner of excellence, aligned with the values of tradition, innovation, and environmental responsibility that define the future of the blue bioeconomy.
