The challenge “From Sea to Dish – Intelligent Traceability for a Sustainable Ocean,” launched by B2E – Blue Bioeconomy CoLAB (B2E CoLAB), won 2nd place in the Portuguese edition of Ocean Hackathon® 2025, which took place between October 17 and 19 in Peniche.
For 48 hours, an international multidisciplinary team worked on the challenge proposed by B2E CoLAB, developing the “Ocean Trace” prototype, an intelligent digital platform that combines blockchain and artificial intelligence to ensure traceability, transparency, and sustainability throughout the seafood value chain.
The solution, presented in the final pitch, allows consumers to easily and intuitively access data on origin, fishing methods, environmental and social impact, as well as nutritional information and sustainability indicators.
At the same time, it offers economic operators a dashboard of indicators that facilitates the monitoring and continuous improvement of the environmental, social, and economic impacts of their products.
The web prototype, available at ocean-trace.vercel.app, also includes a Score Card inspired by systems such as Nutriscore, making it easier to compare products.
Representing B2E CoLAB, IT manager João Reis took on the role of Challenge Owner, supporting the team composed of Lina Dahl, Márcio Gabriel Pereira de Campos, Hendrick Scheifer, Vinicius Sasaki, and Simão Lima, with the support of Christian Homberg, Data Coach at Global Fishing Watch. The members came from different institutions and areas of expertise, ranging from food engineering and software engineering to research in cyber-physical systems, digital twins, artificial intelligence, and the blue economy.
Ocean Hackathon® 2025 featured five challenges and was organized by the Peniche Hub of the Blue Hub Network – Smart Ocean, in collaboration with the “Blue Bio Techpreneurs” project, co-financed by the European Union.
With this result, B2E CoLAB sees its challenge recognized for its relevance and applicability in promoting a more responsible and digital blue economy, reaffirming the role of collaborative innovation in the sustainable transformation of the seafood sector.
