The next edition of Blue Wink-E (Working for INnovation and Knowledge Exchange), scheduled for 20 March 2026 at the Porto Cruise Terminal in Matosinhos, will focus on the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital transformation on ocean-related sectors. Under the theme “Ocean AI Futures”, the event aims to explore how these technologies are redefining areas such as aquaculture, marine biotechnology and environmental monitoring.
In a context marked by global challenges such as climate change, scarcity of natural resources and the need for sustainable transitions, the intersection between cutting-edge technology and the blue economy emerges as a strategic opportunity to foster innovation and generate economic, social and environmental value.
According to Maria Coelho, coordinator of B2E – Blue Bioeconomy CoLAB, the choice of theme reflects a structural shift underway in the sector. “Artificial intelligence is already being used to optimise production processes, improve the management of marine resources and support the creation of new business models. Blue Wink-E 2026 wants to show, clearly and with evidence, how these technologies can contribute to a more sustainable and resilient blue economy,” she states.
The growing use of smart sensors, digital platforms and predictive models has enabled real-time data collection and analysis, risk anticipation, waste reduction and increased efficiency in ocean-related activities. At the same time, the European Union has been reinforcing digital transition as one of the pillars of the European Green Deal, recognising the digitalisation of blue sectors as a key tool to achieve climate neutrality, food security and biodiversity protection.
Maria Coelho highlights that one of the central objectives of the event is to bring these topics closer to the public and encourage informed debate. “There is a lot of noise around artificial intelligence, ranging from excessive enthusiasm to technological fear. We want to create an accessible space for dialogue that helps demystify the technology and strengthen confidence in its application for the benefit of the ocean,” she emphasises, noting that the programme will be announced soon.
Blue Wink-E 2026 is endorsed by the Portuguese National Committee for the Ocean Decade and the Portuguese Committee for the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC-UNESCO), reinforcing the event’s alignment with international priorities for ocean sustainability.
