Algae, marine microorganisms, and other resources are driving skin care, sun protection, and nail care products. These ingredients, often considered safe, effective, and modern by consumers, also reflect the growing trend toward eco-friendly choices.

Data from Innova Market Insights indicates a 13% increase in beauty product launches with marine claims or ingredients, with more than half of these launches occurring in Europe. This growth shows that consumers value natural and organic ingredients, perceiving them as less processed and more beneficial than synthetic alternatives. Algae and other marine organisms stand out for their richness in antioxidants, anti-inflammatory effects, and ability to revitalize the skin, also responding to the demand for multifunctional products.

However, the growth of “blue beauty” requires responsibility. Brands such as Givaudan Active Beauty emphasize the importance of sustainable harvesting practices, protection of marine biodiversity, and support for local communities. For example, Laminaria hyperborea algae is harvested in France in a regulated manner, allowing for three- to four-year recovery cycles and ensuring circular and ethical production. Sustainability is not just a marketing promise: consumers expect concrete and measurable results that demonstrate care for the ocean.

In addition to their environmental impact, marine ingredients offer significant benefits. Recent studies explore collagen from jellyfish, which has high solubility and skin penetration, and molecules produced by marine bacteria that can help whiten skin, reduce wrinkles, and provide natural UV protection. Macroalgae, for example, absorb CO₂ during growth, helping to reduce environmental impact. Innovative sunscreen and nail care products have explored these active ingredients to offer effective and eco-friendly solutions, in line with the concept of “blue beauty.”

Blue beauty shows that it is possible to combine effectiveness, innovation, and sustainability. Marine ingredients not only create distinctive products, but also help preserve ecosystems and support coastal communities, proving that caring for ourselves and the planet can go hand in hand.
