Blue Bioeconomy: 7 years structuring value

Over the past seven years, we have witnessed first-hand what it truly means to build bridges: between research centres and industrial operations, between European policy agendas and business challenges, between scientific knowledge and the concrete needs of sea-related value chains.

This constant proximity has enabled B2E CoLAB to work with companies of different sizes and profiles, guided by a clear principle: applied research only creates impact when it originates from real industrial challenges and delivers implementable solutions. We have never approached research as something abstract, but as something embedded in processes, supply chains and operational realities.

The valorisation of co-products is perhaps the clearest illustration of this approach. Too often, side-streams were regarded merely as waste, with limited perceived potential. Today, we understand that these streams may represent a strategic component of the sector’s future, through biotechnological, functional and economically viable solutions. Shifting this logic is not simply about improving processes; it is about reconfiguring mindsets and business models.

At the same time, we have witnessed an accelerated digital transition across sea-related sectors. Data integration, predictive modelling, traceability systems and artificial intelligence are redefining standards of efficiency, resilience and sustainability. It has become evident that the blue bioeconomy cannot remain peripheral to this transformation.

It is precisely at the intersection of biotechnology, industry and digital transformation that B2E CoLAB has consolidated its role.

Today, the national science and innovation system is evolving. Structures are being reorganised, policies refined and priorities recalibrated. We approach this moment with realism. Evolution is part of maturity.

Yet one element remains constant: beyond institutional architecture, what ultimately matters is the function delivered, and that function must not be compromised.

Portugal needs entities capable of shortening the distance between knowledge generation and market application, accelerating technology transfer and structuring emerging value chains. It needs stable collaborative platforms that operate with companies and research organisations with a clear focus on measurable impact.

As we mark seven years, we do not celebrate an end point.

We reaffirm a commitment.

A commitment to continue structuring the blue bioeconomy with scientific rigour, strategic ambition and environmental responsibility.

A commitment to strengthening the competitiveness of Portuguese companies through applied innovation.

And a commitment to sustaining a collaborative model that has proven valuable, not only for us, but for the entire ecosystem that works alongside us.

The concept has been tested.
The work continues.
