On the 24th of July 2025, the The association for Solidarity in the Area of Fontaínhas, in Porto, received a special action for literacy in science aimed to people between the ages of 6 and 17 years old. This initiative was undertaken in partnership with the Sociedade Portuguesa de Inovação (SPI) and B2E – the Blue BioEconomy CoLAB, within the framework of the european project BlueMissionAA. The goal? To make the concept of Blue Bioeconomy more accessible, inspiring, and practical for people of all ages.
Built in The Mission of the Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030 in the European Union, this activity has had as its mission to raise awareness among the younger generation to the role of ocean resources in the construction of a and more sustainable future. The session involved 47 participants, between the ages of 6 and 17 years and, although originally designed for secondary school students, the suit has been carefully adapted to the different age groups, and ensuring an experience that is inclusive, participatory and meaningful, to all.
In the course of the workshop, they were challenged to think creatively about the potential of marine algae, the shells and the co-products of the fishery (such as bones, skins, or heads, of a fish), as raw materials for areas such as food, energy, or bioplastics. Through practical and accessible dynamics, science took on a concrete form that was close to everyday life promoting critical thinking skills, and appreciation of the ocean as a source of innovation, and sustainability.
By bringing the Blue Bioeconomy to the community of Zona das Fontaínhas, in Porto, this initiative reinforces the appointment of the B2E CoLAB and SPI in bringing scientific knowledge closer to people, promoting a culture of active participation in the transition to a greener and more sustainable economy.
