The B2E CoLAB for Blue Bioeconomy will participate in Portugal’s 1st National Ocean Literacy Conference, which brings together experts, researchers, and changemakers to explore innovative strategies for raising public awareness and engagement in ocean conservation. Organized by Ciência Viva in partnership with the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science, the conference will be held at the Pavilhão do Conhecimento in Lisbon on 5 and 6 December, marking a significant milestone in promoting ocean literacy across the country.

The B2E CoLAB’s participation underscores its commitment to positioning knowledge and the sustainable use of marine resources as cornerstones of a more conscious and responsible society. Through innovative approaches, the B2E CoLAB has been driving initiatives to foster ocean literacy, seeking to engage citizens and communities and encouraging a closer and more informed relationship with the ocean.

The session will focus on ocean literacy as a powerful tool for promoting active citizenship and inspiring social activism to protect marine resources.

Portugal’s 1st National Ocean Literacy Conference is critical to raising awareness among individuals and organizations about the interdependent relationship between humanity and the ocean. The event aims to foster informed and responsible attitudes towards marine resources, encouraging collective action for learning, understanding, and safeguarding the seas.

The initiative is spearheaded by Ciência Viva, Portugal’s National Agency for Scientific and Technological Culture. It operates a network of 20 Science Centres nationwide. Its mission is to bridge the gap between science and society by promoting scientific and technological culture among researchers, citizens, students, teachers, youth, and adults.

The event also aligns with the goals of the National Committee for the Decade of Ocean Science, which leads Portugal to contribute to achieving the global objectives of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science.
